World Naked Bike Ride - Golden Bay NZ It was a balmy March morning at Tarakohe in Golden Bay. Sunny and warm enough to begin taking off our clothes and warm enough to enjoy the cool touch of a paint brush to the body as we prepared for the ride. A young naked Irish couple arrived, green from top to toe. A local woman similarly clad in stunning red and white. A nude man known for his concern for the well-being of the Earth over many years chatted with old friends. A fallen angel, covered in bandages, was full of talk. She had ‘come back’ especially for the event after a truck knocked her from her bike. Bodies wore slogans such as the inventive “No Iraqis Died to Fuel this Bike”. Men, women and children, naked and clothed mingled as a festive, family air emerged. A local police officer, who was to escort us, politely declined an invitation to be body painted. Organizer Victoria Davis worked hard coordinating and marshalling. Soon there were 70 of us. To be naked on a bike is an unusual statement and also a very vulnerable place to be. Our message was twofold. We rode for an earth that needs a radical and urgent cut down in the use of fossil fuels. We rode also for the safety of cyclists who choose sustainable means of transport. Yet along with the solemnity of the issues, there was a buzz amongst us. Distinctions between young and old, Kiwi and international, clothed and naked, friend and stranger felt very small indeed as the gaggle biked the warm road between high limestone cliffs and the sparkling bay. To our delight we came across a wonderful woman sitting naked on a rock outcrop above the road, offering queenly support. The police escort led us to Pohara and lots of roadside curiosity and support. At the Totally Roasted Café, we wrapped up with speeches, prizes and celebration. Naturists typically carry a deep gratitude for life and a reverence for the Earth. But humankind is beginning to destroy the planet. Those who rode at Golden Bay on 10 March say “Stop!”. | |||
