2 December 2002 Clothes optionalBy SARAH JARVISDress and suit fittings weren't a priority for a Californian couple who tied the knot in the Mackenzie in December 2002. Wearing nothing but their birthday suits, Paul Kircher and Diana Ackerman were married in front of a dozen undressed guests at Aoraki Naturally, a clothes-free homestay. Joining the bride and groom was Alexandra celebrant and naturist Nelson Redshaw. Mr and Mrs Kircher met last November while camping at Laguna del Sol, a privately owned naturist resort in California. "Meeting the way we did takes away all the games there is literally nothing to hide," Mr Kircher said. After exploring all options the couple decided on getting married in New Zealand, thanks mainly to Aoraki Naturally owner Kay Hannam. "We found Kay through the internet. She sent us a note offering her place and everything fell into place." Mr Kircher said Mrs Hannam shared the same beliefs as them. "Kay organised the whole thing and has been a real doll," he said. Residents of Placerville in California, Mr Kircher, 53, and Mrs Kircher, 50, said although they didn't want a big wedding, they didn't mind the publicity they had received. "We know our ceremony may cause a bit of a stir and we don't mind that, as long as it doesn't turn into a side-show circus." A systems analyst, Mr Kircher admits being a naturist is a relatively new experience for him. "In my case it was always me and clothes never really got along," he laughed. A single father, he said in the past he had been wary of what other people thought. "For one I was a single parent. Anything out of the ordinary and the state would jump at the chance to raise your child. "I was also a scout leader and a soccer coach so I didn't dare come out of the closet." Although open and comfortable about her nudity, Mrs Kircher said it was something that people didn't openly accept, and in most cases only tolerated. Mr Kircher said as some of his friends still didn't know about their lifestyle, they would take two sets of wedding photographs, one au-naturelle and one clothed. |
