Much of the content in this issue is devoted to gaining public acceptance of naturism. From Marty Braithwaite’s travel blog to friends and family reporting in the same manner all the new and varied experiences of travel in Europe including visits to local naturist beaches; to a social/email networking group established by Glenne Findon, now based in the Bay of Plenty, encourages not only seasoned naturists but also the general public - the ‘fringe’ or ‘casual’ naturists to enjoy our lifestyle in a safe and natural environment with like-minded people.
Joyce Fleming throws down the towel and challenges us to celebrate the passing of the winter solstice with a national ‘polar plunge’. In total contrast naturist swim nights are held fortnightly by a small number of organisations in heated pools.
The front page of the Hurunui News depicting the local rugby club’s nude calendar polarised the community with reaction ranging from ‘disgusted’ by one irate letter writer and ‘refreshing change’ by another. In congratulating the newspaper, a resident reiterated what we know already and that is "kids do not get offended or frightened by nakedness unless adults teach them that."
I am sure you will agree with Joyce Fleming’s advice that positive reputation or word of mouth is known to be the simplest and most effective form of PR. When it comes to the crunch, how many of us are prepared to front up to the media and promote the philosophy and benefits of naturism? Sure journalists have their own agenda, but isn’t that all the more reason for us to have ours as well? Let’s get ‘media savvy’ and educate the huge majority out there that are extremely curious about other peoples nudity.
We bring you news of a nude photography workshop to be held this summer; but in the meantime, enjoy the capital’s best kept secret this spring and head for the grounds of Wellington Naturists to view the riot of colour of over 50 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas.
